Remembering “Bombi” – April 19, 2015

“Bombi” was Erin’s paternal grandmother, (Lora) Jane Goodman Wheeler, who lived to be 100 years and 9 months. Jane died 10 years ago today.

Erin and I are shown calling Erin’s Aunt Jan, who lives in Willits, CA. Jan is Jane’s only surviving child.
We spoke with Jan for about 45 minutes tonight, using the speaker phone. Erin was very animated and
was able to convey her ideas to Jan.

Jane was a very earthy person, lots of fun. She moved back to Sacramento from Fort Bragg, CA, in 1979, where she lived at St. Francis Manor independent senior living. We would go to breakfast every Sunday with her and her best friend.

In 2003 I was going to Oaxaca for 4 weeks to study Spanish and she wasn’t feeling well. Jane waited until she knew that I was safely on the plane before she called 911. She stayed in the hospital for a few days, then she needed to go to a skilled nursing facility which Colleen picked out. The last 2 years of her life she lived at Asbury Park, less than a mile from here, where I could visit every day.

Erin used to bring Paco up from San Jose about every 2 weeks to see his great-grandmother.

Erin says Bombi was a fantastic woman!

Jane was a remarkable woman. It must have been wonderful to have her as a grandmother.

It was such a joy watching Paco with both of his great grandmothers that first year of his life. Bombi was indeed a fantastic woman.
