Erin walking better – Wed. Dec. 11, 2013

Erin slept late this morning saying that she was recovering from yesterday’s busy day. I am always glad that she is asleep when I get up.

She says walking is much easier with the cast. She walked around her room a lot, packing to go back to Davis, etc. The purpose of a series of casts is to stretch the muscles in the foot, so that she flexes the foot more when she walks, rather than plunking it down. There will be a series of 2 or 3 plaster casts before the permanent brace.

She can’t get the cast wet, so when she took a shower, she first had a trash compactor bag over the cast fastened with the tie plus rubber bands. Then, there was another black larger trash bag fastened similary. The outer bag got water in it, but fortunately, the cast stayed dry, but I don’t think she will risk that again.

Clark got the TV fixed in her room, so she was happy.

Cindy came at 6:15 pm to take her back to Davis, and I took a 2 hour nap!

FYI: After my foot surgery I couldn’t put pressure on the foot nor get it wet for 10 weeks. The nurse who came to help me would wrap a garbage bag and taped it with surgical tape to my leg. Then she put a small towel around the top of that bag, held in place by a second bag also taped. (Rubber bands which we tried, let it leak like in your case). This way sometimes the towel got a little humid, but the whole combination never let any water onto the bandages.
    Good luck!

Thanks, Judy, for the great advice. Will try it when Erin comes here next week.
