Erin at Fenton’s 17 April 2013

I picked up Erin in Davis this morning and we headed to Vacaville to
the outlets. We stopped first for a very leisurely lunch at Fenton’s
Creamery and Restaurant located near the old Nut Tree in Vacaville.
This is an off shoot of the original Fenton’s ice cream parlor
on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. Fenton’s was founded in 1894.

Erin is shown with her dessert, a sundae. I had a “petite scoop” of
black walnut. It was equal to 3 or 4 normal scoops.

At the outlets Erin wheeled herself around and could even put the
chair in the back seat all by herself. It is amazing to watch her
negotiate the 2 rather steep steps from the garage into her
house. She puts the cane ahead of her and then she holds onto
the molding and backs down. She did this several times very
routinely as we were getting ready to leave.

On the way home we stopped by Tommy’s nursery school
meeting Raquel there just as she was about to pick him up.
Erin talked to a couple of the teachers whom she had not
seen in over a year. The head teacher says that she reads
the blog most every day. Amazing!

Love the picture of Erin. I well remember Fenton’s ice cream in Oakland. It was very popular. I wonder if it is still in Oakland. I was so surprised when I drove by the Nut Tree and found a shopping mall. When did that happen? I loved the old restaurant and shop.
How nice to drop by the nursery school! I’ll bet Tommy was glad to see you.

Yes Fenton’s is still in Oakland … a favorite of Ralph’s (my sister Joan’s husband). He grew up just a few blocks away.

The Nut Tree probably closed 10 years ago and was empty for a number of years, then the mall was built. When our kids were little, The Nut Tree was part of our routine when traveling to Ft. Bragg or to the Bay Area.
